Book Review: Sitting Pretty the View from My Ordinary Resilient Disabled Body by Rebekah Taussig
In case you didn’t know I love to read, almost anything.
WOW!!! What a read, I wish I had this book to read when I was in my twenties. My experiences as a woman with a disability match hers in so many ways, I certainly would have been better prepared to deal with situations in a better way. This book left me thinking for days after I finished reading it.
Rebekah has written a book that is funny, Thought-provoking, Immersive. Her stories about dating, teaching, and finding affordable housing make the narrative feel so real. This book resonated with me like no other book has before.
When she experiences lack of accessibility when she goes on outings within the community. Her struggles with expressing herself when discussing disability issues whether with family, friends, coworkers, her students or complete strangers.
This memoir-in-essays completely redefines how we talk about disability, moving away from tropes of tragedy or forced “inspiration” to show the rich complexity of ordinary life.
With only 8 chapters this book is a quick read Please do yourself and me a favor and read this book, you will understand disability in a way you have never understood before.
